And there are no examples of anything like that on this album. There are only so many times Chris Martin can write/sing a song like Fix You. And it will do its own business on iTunes Rihanna fans buying just that track, elevating it to some level of success that fans will then take as some justification. It's hidden so as to not instantly put off any Coldplay fans who are still kidding themselves by believing their band is not a sellout pop act. I persevered with this album - only because it's the sad state of affairs of the music industry that this is a big deal of an album, potentially - and I can't say, having made it through the record now, that it was worth it.īuried near the end is a duet with Rihanna ( Princess of China). Even the devil wouldn't feel that good about signing this deal.
The absurd Hurts Like Heaven sounds like a cry for help from a Vampire Weekend covers band that arrived four years too late but are sure they still came up with the sound first, if they could just get out from being trapped inside the compressed iPhone app where they reside. The first time I attempted to listen to Mylo Xyloto I couldn't get more than two and a half songs through it.
There is no other reason for a person to connect with this music.īut Mylo shows Coldplay up as so completely unsure of what it wants to be - mixing some hackneyed form of ultra-pop with softer, acoustic folk-ish pop that could have come from Parachutes and/or X & Y. That and the fact that their albums are timed to arrive in between U2 albums. Martin's trembling voice, his very British foppishness and his marriage to a Hollywood star are the things that have carried this band. It reveals Coldplay, and Martin especially, as musicians who have no understanding of what they are doing, beyond standing in place long enough for a record label to attempt to make money.Ĭoldplay is the last bastion of the bad pop act that thinks it's a smart pop act the final reminder (hopefully) that the musically tasteless can appear to carry some weight.
Maybe X & Y was slightly more like Parachutes and Viva La Vida was slightly more like Rush of Blood in that the third album was slightly subdued, the fourth tended more towards the bombast. And a Coldplay obsessive - frightening that such a thing exists - will buy and love anything anyway, so the albums remain interchangeable. It showed that they were done, as songwriters no new tricks.Īlbums three and four ( X & Y in 2005 and Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends from 2008) were largely interchangeable to all but the biggest Coldplay fans. And then A Rush of Blood to the Head seemed to create that exact sensation for the band and fans it made Coldplay the stadium pop-rockers we now either love or loathe. Parachutes wasn't entirely awful, if stunningly mediocre past the early listening experience. I never gave Coldplay a lot of thought early on. They've since made a career out of being exactly that - and, essentially, by being better or at least more prominent than Keane and Snow Patrol and a bunch of others with similar- ish ideas and scope. It certainly arrived at the right time too: just as Radiohead had made it clear that they would not be repeating High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees along came Chris Martin and band, eager to not quite be Radiohead and not quite be U2. There were some okay songs on Parachutes, the band's debut. I have never been the biggest Coldplay fan. Coldplay has just released its fifth album, the absurdly titled Mylo Xyloto.
